چکیده

The absorption performance of a locally-reacting acoustic metamaterial under oblique incidence is studied. The metamaterial is composed of a slotted panel, each slit being loaded by an array of Helmholtz resonators. The system is analytically studied using the transfer matrix method, accounting for the viscothermal losses both in the resonator elements and in the slits, allowing the representation of the reflection coefficient in the complex frequency plane. We show that by tuning the geometry of the metamaterial, perfect absorption peaks can be obtained on demand at selected frequencies and different angles of incidence. When tilting the incidence angle, the peaks of perfect absorption are shifted in frequency, producing an acoustic iridescence effect similar to the optic iridescence achieved by incomplete band gap. Effectively, we show that in this kind of locally-reacting metamaterial, perfect and omnidirectional absorption for a given frequency is impossible to achieve because the metamaterial impedance does not depend on the incidence angle (i.e., the impedance is a locally reacting one). The system is interpreted in the complex frequency plane by analysing the trajectories of the zeros of the reflection coefficient. We show that the trajectories of the zeros do not overlap under oblique incidence, preventing the observation of perfect and omnidirectional absorption in locally reacting metamaterials. Moreover, we show that for any locally resonant material, the absorption in diffuse field takes a maximal value of 0.951, which is achieved by a material showing perfect absorption for an incidence angle of 50.34 degrees.

Effect of non-acoustic properties on the sound absorption of polyurethane foams

In this paper the influence of non-acoustic properties on the sound absorption coefficient of polyurethane foams as a porous medium is investigated. Biot’s equations with transfer matrix method, as the solution approach are employed to evaluate the sound absorption coefficient of selected polyurethane foams. The major issue is the dependency of non-acoustic properties on each other which makes ...

Theoretical model of homogeneous metal–insulator–metal perfect multi-band absorbers for the visible spectrum

We present a rigorous study of the perfect absorption properties of metal–insulator–metal (MIM) structures in the visible spectrum. We provide a derivation (based on the transfer matrix method) and analysis of the conditions for which the perfect absorption occurs. We show that these conditions are fulfilled when the incident wave excites the eigenmodes of the structure. The quantitative analys...

Perfect and broadband acoustic absorption by critically coupled sub-wavelength resonators

Perfect absorption is an interdisciplinary topic with a large number of applications, the challenge of which consists of broadening its inherently narrow frequency-band performance. We experimentally and analytically report perfect and broadband absorption for audible sound, by the mechanism of critical coupling, with a sub-wavelength multi-resonant scatterer (SMRS) made of a plate-resonator/cl...

A multiband perfect absorber based on hyperbolic metamaterials

In recent years, considerable research efforts have been focused on near-perfect and perfect light absorption using metamaterials spanning frequency ranges from microwaves to visible frequencies. This relatively young field is currently facing many challenges that hampers its possible practical applications. In this paper, we present grating coupled-hyperbolic metamaterials (GC-HMM) as multiban...

Subwavelength perfect acoustic absorption in membrane-type metamaterials: a geometric perspective

Perfect absorption of low frequency sound with subwavelength absorbers has always been a challenge, owing to the difficulty in achieving impedance matching and the inherent weak absorption coefficients of materials at low frequencies. Recently it was shown that when a membrane-type resonator’s modes are hybridized through the addition of a thin air-sealed cell with a back reflecting surface, pe...
